Uncreative writing.

We were talking about citation in class lately, and asking “how explicitly to cite? because so much gets in our minds and is there but you can’t tell.”

Creation is an act of citation; you cannot escape influence or quotation. Maybe that’s disappointing if you want ultimate creativity, to create something of nothing; but I’ve always loved that everything has millions of layers and thus nothing’s ever finished being understood. And if citation is ubiquitous, then criticism, theory, and analysis can maybe become more-creative acts too.

My trusty cell phone is here to explore staircases, creep into ceilings, and have late dinners of fennel and mushrooms and dark chocolate.
